You said yes! So, now the ring is firmly planted on your finger, what next?

Organising your big day can be stressful if you don’t know where to start, so we’ve put together this handy Hong Kong wedding planning guide to help break down some of the key things you will need to think about. Of course, our tips are particularly useful if you’re planning to host your wedding right here in the 852, but for others tying the knot in their home country, it should also provide some much-needed inspiration.

weddings hong kong wedding venues

The Venue

First things first, deciding which country and city you want to host your wedding in is a very good starting point. You’ll most likely want to visit several options to see what tops the list for you and your significant other (unless, of course, you picked your ideal venue in your childhood!). Some places get booked up years in advance (yes, really) so it’s best not to get too ahead of yourself with other planning until you’ve locked this down. Here are some of the best hotel wedding venues on offer in Hong Kong. Of course, you’re not just tied to Hong Kong, there are plenty of other great wedding destinations across Asia to check out too.

The Dress

Now you’ve got the venue secured and most likely paid a hefty deposit (no one ever said weddings were cheap), it’s time to sort your outfit! Thankfully, there are lots of great places to go wedding dress shopping in Hong Kong that will cater to all tastes and budgets, whether to want to rent something, buy off the rail and go for something bespoke. Most bridal boutiques require you to book an appointment and some may even charge a fee for trying on their dresses (redeemable against purchase). It’s worth going prepared so you get the most out of the experience, whether that’s knowing in advance the style of dress you want or the designer you admire, to wearing appropriate underwear (note to self: no big black pants!) and bringing along a pair of heels (although most shops can lend you a pair). Don’t be afraid to ask if it’s possible to do some alterations, for example if you want sleeves added/removed or a longer train. A lot of designers will be able to accommodate your requests – and as they say, if you don’t ask, you don’t get!

weddings hong kong wedding planning flowers

Flowers

You’ll also need to think about what florist to choose and what exactly you need from their services. Is it just bouquets for the bride and bridesmaids, and button holes for the groom and his groomsmen? Or do you also need table centrepieces and some standalone arrangements to decorate your venue? You’ll need to answer these questions before you even get to picking out a colour scheme and the types of flowers you want! Remember what’s in season varies throughout the year, so make sure you don’t have your heart set on daffodils if your wedding is in the winter.

Hair and Makeup

You should decide what to do about your hair and makeup. Lots of people don’t want the pressure of having to do their own on their big day, so it makes sense to employ the help of a professional. It’s best to book in a trial to make sure you don’t have an unwanted surprise when you look in the mirror just before walking down the aisle. Browse Pinterest ahead of time so you can show your makeup artist or hairdresser exactly what you’re after. And don’t forget to make sure your nails are in tip top condition too, by booking a manicure in the days leading up to the wedding.

weddings hong kong wedding catering

Wedding Catering

One of the most important things is planning on how to keep your guests fed and watered throughout the day. That’s a task that’s very easy if you’re in a hotel or a venue with in-house caterers. But what about if you need to sort your own wedding catering? It’s a great way to be able to have more control over what makes it on to the menu, rather than being limited to several options on a set menu. But you might find you have the opposite problem and there’s almost too much choice! The bride and groom should be given the chance to taste their full menu well before the big day so that if any changes need to be made, there’s still time.

The Photographer

There will be plenty of memories you’ll want captured on camera throughout your day, right from the getting ready all the way through to the drunken dancing. So choosing a wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you will make. Do you want more formal portrait photography or would you prefer some fly on the wall candid shots? Or perhaps a mix of both? It’s worth taking the time to go through different photographer’s websites and social media accounts to get a sense of their style and make sure it fits in with your vision of how you want your big day recorded. Do let them know well ahead of the day itself what group shots you want (whether that’s lots of shots with granny or the girls).

weddings hong kong wedding planning cake

The Cake

Now let’s talk about the cake! Not only do you want this to be extremely tasty but it also has to look the part, because the cake-cutting and eating will inevitably end up featuring in lots of your photos. You’ll be spoilt for choice trying to decide where to get your wedding cake made in Hong Kong and that’s before you even get to talking about flavour, the type of icing, number of tiers, decorations etc. Just make sure you get some tasting sessions in too (after all, there’s no such thing as too much red velvet!).

The Favours

It’s up to you whether you decide to give your wedding guests a little gift on the day, but if you do, it’s worth putting some thought into how you can make these individual or unique to you as a couple. There are plenty of wedding favour ideas to suit every budget out there, so you certainly won’t be short of options. If in doubt, alcohol miniatures always go down well, just don’t expect them to last beyond the meal! Having small favours at place settings can also help to decorate your tables.

weddings hong kong wedding stationery

Wedding Stationery

Once you’ve got your venue ticked off the list and sorted whether your ceremony will be held in the same place or somewhere else, you can also start to think about when to get your invites out. Traditionally it’s six to eight weeks ahead of the big day, but that time frame should be longer if you are expecting your guests to travel a long distance. Most couples now send out a save the date ahead of time to give them a rough idea of who can and can’t make it. There are lots of online options for ordering wedding stationery, but if you want to be able to see things in person and deal face to face with someone, here’s our pick of the best brands available here in Hong Kong.

The Wedding Planner

If the thought of all this organising seems a bit much to you and you feel like you need some hand holding along the way, it may be worth employing the services of a wedding planner. Not only will they be able to point you in the right direction when it comes to vendors, but they will also be able to get quotes and do the booking on your behalf. Of course, some might say that takes the fun out of the planning process, but it’s certainly something to consider if you can afford it. It could save you a lot of blood, sweat and tears in the long run.

weddings hong kong wedding zero waste

Eco-Friendly Weddings

One thing that’s well worth taking some time to think about before you get too far down the planning path, is how you can make your wedding more eco-friendly, or even zero waste. There are plenty of companies that can help make sure you are making “greener” choices, so you cut down on unnecessary wedding waste. Just a few tweaks here and there can make all the difference!

The Hen Do/Bachelorette

Don’t forget about the hen do! Amidst all the wedding planning every bride deserves the chance to kick back and relax with her girlfriends before the big day. Whether you want a full on party night in Wan Chai or LKF (perhaps even both!), or a more sedate afternoon tea and a day of pampering at the spa, check out this list of the best places to host bridal showers in the 852.

The main thing to remember throughout the whole planning process is to have fun. Don’t get too wrapped up in the tiny details. We promise you will be the only one who notices if your table centrepieces contain two less flowers than you expected, or if the shade of icing on your cake is slightly yellower than you imagined. Let the wedmin begin!

Beach Barbecues
– Hong Kong has no lack of beachside barbecue pits; take advantage and raid the supermarkets for crisps, dips and brews and head to a butchery (Bones & Blades has just opened in Sai Ying Pun) for sausages and steaks. Or alternatively call up a catering company and have them do the legwork for you (Invisible Kitchen have a great barbecue package) – they’ll even deliver! The barbecue pits and tents in Shek O are a firm favourite as they’re right on the beach and close to the water.

House of Siren – A playground for adults, this stylish and intimate space will work with you to plan a party that’s bound to go off with a bang. Hire a photographer to capture the evening and dress up in one of many ‘couture costumes’ as you drink in your favourite tipples in an ‘olde worlde’ atmosphere. Intrigued? Click here for more deets.

Book a Staycation – Make a weekend of it! Check the bridal party in to a suite and celebrate in style. Many of the hotels will give you the added option to fork out for the use of their spa and club facilities too, meaning free drinks and nibbles, perfect for pre-gaming.

Make the most of Macau – It might not be Vegas, but it’s close! Whisk the Mrs to Macau for the weekend and party like a rock star at one of the many hotels’ pool parties, snap up a suite for the night or force her hand in to conquering the ‘world’s tallest bungee jump.’

Cook up a Storm –
Have a foodie on your hands? Satisfy the bride’s sweet (or savoury) tooth with a private cooking class at The Mixing Bowl. Whip up some traditional Hong Kong treats like egg tarts and pineapple buns or make a couple of pizzas from scratch, paired with the perfect red.

Hen Do Ideas Hong Kong

Brunches and Bubbles:

Hong Kong loves a brunch, and bride-to-be is no exception! A foolproof booking bound to get the girls together for a memorable (for the most part) afternoon laden with bubbles and delish eats, don your hen with highly elaborate sash and start the day as you mean to go on. Keep it light on the purse with these brunches under $500 – you’ll need that cash for when you’re swallowing your pride fifth jello shot of the evening!

Afternoon Teas

Who says that a hen has to be all about penis-shaped straws and flashing shot glasses? We can be classy! For the most part. Hong Kong hosts heaps of cute and quirky afternoon teas to choose from. Book in for a swanky afternoon at Café Grey Deluxe or a posh do at The Peninsula – tea, scones and champagne? Sounds perfect to us!

Sassy Soirées

Entertainment Companies – If you’re keen on a more errr… traditional style hen do, there are definitely a few companies happy to help you plan your night. Hong Kong Stag (don’t be deterred by the name!) offer a range of activities from champagne tours to a private strip show whereas TysonHK will put together a series of affordable and scandalous parties which include sex toy shows, sexy games and a stripper performance. Ask about their limo and yacht packages too for an extravagant affair!

Alternatively add a little Sass to your shindig and contact the boys at Valley Butlers to stick around to serve as a little eye candy or help you in the planning stages. Their exclusive nightclub package at CÉ LA VI is only $400 a head, including a table, $4,000 worth of drinks, your very own butler and cliché (yet imperative) hen accessories for the bride and her party.

Pole dancing classes – A horrendously cheesy hen do idea, and we love it. Pole dancing classes are a serious laugh and there’s heaps of studios in Hong Kong that are happy to host! A simple Google search will suffice (just make sure safe search is turned on if you’re doing a little research in the office).

Book a bachelorette amongst Manhattan’s elite

New York City will always have a special place in my heart and for this reason, I could not think of anywhere else I would rather celebrate my last weekend as a “Scotland” and party with my girlfreinds before heading down the aisle.

Instead of a traditional bachelorette party, I wanted to do something a little different and keep it classy. I had heard about The Mark Hotel when I used to live in NYC but never had the opportunity to stay there. Luckily, I was able to arrange a stay for my girlfriends and I and it really was a weekend like no other!

The Hotel

The ultra chic, 5 star hotel is housed in a historic, 1920s building in the heart of one of New York’s most luxurious neighboorhoods. The Mark overlooks the famous Madison Ave. and is only a short walk to Central Park, which is perfect for grabbing a coffee and people watching (or excercising)!

If I could describe the hotel in one word, it would be GLAMOUROUS! The hotel and the staff posses a certain level of sophistication which is apparent the moment you step inside. The Art Deco inspired décor is a theme that runs through the entire hotel and was meticulousy executed by French designer Jauques Gange.

The in-house Federic Fekkai salon is another added benefit for any girl in need of a new ‘do, or just a really good blow-out before a big night out in the city that never sleeps!

Hungry? Well, The Mark has you covered and by no means is this your average hotel restaurant. The Mark Restaurant features a menu crafted specially for the hotel by award-winning, Michelen starred chef, Jean-Gorges Vongerichten. The best part is you don’t even need to leave your room to induldge in this expereince as the room service menu is just as magnificent!

a suite in the mark hotel new york

The Room

Upon arriving, we were informed that we were upgraded to the Garden Suite which was a one bedroom suite with a foyer, separate living room, kinchenette and a bathroom. The glamorous, art-deco theme was apparent throughout the suite, from the vases of beautiful white roses to the black and white marble bathroom (obsessed!).

As if the upgrade wasn’t enough, the staff at The Mark got wind that I was in NYC to celebrate my bachelorette party, and they sent up a complimentary bottle of bubbles and a beautifully hand written note. That personal touch really set them apart from other hotels in my book!

a bedroom in the mark hotel new york

After a long night of eating, drinking and dancing, I was more than ready to return to our own little piece of heaven on the Upper East Side. The king size bed covered in a cloud-like douvet had been calling my name ever since I stepped into the suite. As soon as my head sunk into that pillow, I was out!

After an amazing night sleep, there is absolutely nothing better than waking up, putting on a plushy oversized robe, drawing back the curtains and seeing a great view of New York City while sipping on your Starbucks. It was truly a wonderful way to end the weekend!

The Verdict

New York City is of course filled with so many great places to stay, but if you are looking for a one of a kind (and luxurious!) experience, than The Mark is a must try! Even if it is just for dinner at their fabulous restaurant, the ambience and atmosphere makes it a true New York icon.

The best travel spots for brides-to-be

Hen parties don’t have to involve phallic-shaped pasta and regrettable outfits. More zen, less hen, the following five finds from Mr & Mrs Smith will calm any Bridezilla’s nerves before the big day – and possibly have her reconsidering her honeymoon plans, too! All you need to do? Pack your girl gang.

inside a villa at the slate hotel

THE SLATE, Phuket, Thailand

The Slate is inspired by Phuket’s industrial mining heritage, but you won’t need to bring a head torch. The only thing you’ll be mining here is the hotel’s arsenal of attractions: two adults-only pools, an indulgent spa and a blissful beach. If you’ve bagged a private pool villa, sink into your pool for skinny dips and Jacuzzi trips, before soaking up the sun in sunken loungers – with champagne on ice, naturally. And if you’re on a mission to keep fit for the big day, take part in yoga, t’ai chi, Pilates, Muay Thai and more.

Smith Extra: Free return airport transfers

a night time view of the pool at shinta mani club

SHINTA MANI CLUB, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Make like Lara Croft (minus the hot pants-and-guns combo, perhaps) and head to Shinta Mani Club in Siem Reap. Tick off eye-boggling cultural lures at Angkor’s dazzling temples; after your adventures, you’ll definitely have earned a treatment or two in the calming spa (the energising Khmer Coffee Scrub, using white clay and coffee beans from Ratanakiri Province, left us buzzing). Sign up for one of Shinta Mani’s yoga or cookery classes – if you can pull yourselves away from fine dining in swing seats (yes, really) or cocktails at the Pool Bar.

Smith Extra: A ‘Chef’s Recommendation’ tasting menu for two, excluding alcohol

the living room of a villa at the puLI hotel

THE PULI HOTEL AND SPA, Shanghai, China

Tea gets a ravishing rethink at the PuLi Hotel, whose considerable charms include a brew-themed spa (forget PG Tips – we’re talking green-tea wraps, white-tea scrubs and rose-tea beautification packages). After Shanghai shopping sessions, you’ll be grateful for the sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi; Sichuan Spice cocktails at the sunken, 32-metre Long Bar should also put a pep in your step. Bed down in a Grand Studio, so you can watch the upscale world go by from your king-size bed or corner bath tub (each of these studios also has a lovely window seat with a tea set at the ready).

Smith Extra: Fresh fruit and chocolates on arrival

hot tub at capella hotel singapore

CAPELLA, Singapore

Join the peacocks parading amid Capella’s art-filled 30-acre grounds and give the birds a run for their money by packing your most glamorous of cocktail dresses! The inimitable Foster + Partners are responsible for this ravishing resort’s marriage of urban pizazz and colonial elegance; Indonesian designer Jaya Ibrahim conceived the rooms’ earthy hues and fuss-free feel. Singapore is one of the world’s hot spots when it comes to eating, drinking and shopping – but be sure to set aside some time for Capella’s award-winning Auriga Spa, whose treatments are designed around the cycles of the moon.

Smith Extra: English high tea for two at the Knolls

the pool at apsara rive droite hotel

THE APSARA RIVE DROITE, Luang Prabang, Laos

Make like a gecko and idle away days on the sun loungers at the Apsara Rive Droite, a chic little hideaway with a peaceful waterside setting, designer furnishings and delicious food. You can expect plenty of peace and quiet, since little Smiths aren’t invited (teens are, mind) and there are just nine rooms, set across a pair of restored buildings. The restaurant has a small but mighty menu – try the dried beef and lemongrass salad, or spicy buffalo sausage – and the Rive Droite Bar rustles up rather luscious cocktail creations (lychee daiquiris, for example).

Smith Extra: Dinner for two at the hotel’s restaurant, excluding drinks

Plan your beachy bachelorette with The Luxe Nomad!

Whether you call it a hen ‘do or a bachelorette party, every bride-to-be deserves a weekend away with her besties before her walk down the aisle! Being so close to so many amazing destinations, I knew I wanted to take advantage of this and plan an amazing bachelorette weekend with my girlfriends to relax, unwind and soak up some sun before heading back to the States for my big day.

The Luxe Nomad was so accommodating (as usual!) in helping to select a villa that would fit all my needs and we decided on Villa Roxo, a stunning sun-lit holiday escape located in Phuket.

the interior of villa ruxo in phuket

The Villa

Villa Roxo is one of seven Sava luxury villas located at the Southern end of Natai Beach on the island of Phuket. The first word that came to mind when entering the villa was “breathtaking”! This expansive four-bedroom holiday home is set out over three levels with the main floor featuring an 18 meter outdoor infinity pool that immediately caught my eye.

the living room of roxo villa phuket

The middle level was perfect for relaxing and taking in the stunning sunsets with a large open area and floor to ceiling windows that would slide open so you could smell that great salty beach air! The dining area was a great focal point of the villa and naturally we spent a lot of time there eating and drinking.

girls in a swimming pool

Upstairs, we found four large bedrooms, two of which had incredible sea views. The Master Bedroom had my name all over it with its large windows that let in so much light and a bathroom that was bigger than my current apartment (no joke!). There is nothing like waking up to the sound of waves, opening your blinds and stepping out on to a balcony overlooking the water (pure heaven!).

The Service

If the modern, beachy décor and stunning views weren’t enough, the staff at Roxo made our stay that much more enjoyable! There was a full-time villa manager who was there to help us with any request (he even helped us blow up our giant swan & unicorn floats!). Along with the villa manager, there was an in-house Thai chef, two housekeepers and a concierge. We chose to play it low key and stay at the villa for the majority of our time, but the concierge could help arrange transport and activities in many of the major areas of Phuket.

One of my favourite parts about this trip (aside from the numerous bottles of Whispering Angel Rosé that we consumed) were the daily massages! After a long, hard day of sunbathing and trying to gracefully climb on top of our unicorn float without spilling our drinks, a 90-minute massage in the comfort of our own bedrooms was essential!

flat lay of food

The Food

I could seriously write an entire post just about the food at the villa and how good it was! Thai food has quickly turned into one of my favourite cuisines and I crave it on a regular basis. To say I was excited for this trip for the food alone is an understatement!

Our chef was simply amazing and because of this, we decided to eat every meal over the weekend at the villa. Upon arrival we were greeted with traditional Thai treats like chicken and beef satay, spring rolls and prawn crackers. For dinner both nights, she really pulled out all the stops! From pad thai, green curry, grilled chicken in banana leaves and freshly caught fish, to my absolute favourite, mango sticky rice! The best part about having all our meals at the villa with our private chef was the fact that we could sit around the table in our plush bathrobes, no makeup and eat until our hearts’ content.

The Verdict

Looking back, my bachelorette weekend planned through The Luxe Nomad at Villa Roxo was everything I wanted! For any brides-to-be out there, or any ladies in need of a girls weekend away from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong, I highly recommend Villa Roxo!
