From classic TV picks to cult favourite series and more recent hits, we’re shining a spotlight on some of our favourite LGBTQI+ shows to watch on Netflix this Pride Month.

The entertainment industry has certainly come a long way in terms of representing LGBTQI+ individuals. We’re all for seeing more of their stories and experiences played out onscreen, and it’s about time for non-straight characters to take up more than a supporting role. Whether they make us laugh or cry, they instil complexity, strength and vulnerability into a show, making it all the more compelling and insightful. In celebration of Pride Month, we’ve spotlighted our favourite LGBTQI+ shows to binge on Netflix Hong Kong right now.

LGBTQ+ Shows On Netflix Hong Kong: Heartstopper

Heartstopper

Adapted from the webcomic and graphic novel of the same name by Alice Oseman, British coming-of-age romcom Heartstopper tells the story of Charlie (Joe Locke), a gay schoolboy who falls in love with Nick (Kit Connor), the popular rugby player seated next to him in form class. The series received high acclaim for its representation of the LGBTQI+ community, including a transgender character played by a transgender actress! Set your reminders, season two is coming in August 2023.

XO, Kitty

Do you remember little Kitty Covey from “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before”? Well, she’s off to Seoul, travelling across the world for true love (yes, they grow up so fast!) and new discoveries. The show has already garnered a fierce fan following, and we’ll save the rest for you to binge and find out without any spoilers — there are plot twists in store!

LGBTQ+ Shows On Netflix Hong Kong: Special

Special

Special is nothing short of just that. The show centres around a young gay man with cerebral palsy who decides to come out of the closet and finally go after the life he wants. The show is based on the memoir “I’m Special: And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves” by actor, director, comedian and LGBTQ activist Ryan O’Connell, who also stars in, writes and executive produces the series.

LGBTQ+ Shows Netflix Hong Kong Lifestyle: Atypical

Atypical

While the show centres around autism, we couldn’t help but tune in for Sam’s sister Casey (who’s also bisexual in real life) and her personal growth in the show. Atypical is a heartwarming show that still addresses the realness of complicated relationships and going after what you truly want.

Halston

Starring Ewan McGregor as the titular lead, Halston tells the untold story of the meteoric rise and subsequent fall of the first American celebrity fashion designer who shot to fame when he designed the pillbox hat Jacqueline Kennedy wore to her husband John F. Kennedy’s presidential inauguration.

LGBTQ+ Shows Netflix Hong Kong Lifestyle: Heartbreak High

Heartbreak High

A self-reboot of the 1994 series, teenage drama Heartbreak High isn’t just meant for the teens (is it ever?). The show doesn’t miss a note when it comes to quirky, unique characters that each have their own layer and sexual expression — it’s even been dubbed as the “ultra queer series”.

Eastsiders

Eastsiders follows on-and-off couple Thom (Van Hansis) and Cal (Kit Williamson) as they come to terms with their infidelity and substance abuse. The show also features RuPaul Drag Race star Willam, who received a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor — marking the first time a drag queen has been nominated for an Emmy in an acting category.

LGBTQ+ Shows On Netflix Hong Kong: Young Royals

Young Royals

This steamy Swedish teen drama is set at an elite boarding school where the Prince of Wilhelm of Sweden dives into a budding romance with a fellow student and all the drama that comes with it. Fans of Young Royals will be glad to hear that a third season is in the works.

LGBTQ Shows: Sex Education

Sex Education

Hailed as one of the most refreshing and unabashed (not to mention binge-able) coming-of-age teen shows out there, Sex Education is very much about, well, sex, but also has much more to offer than advice on the subject. By the end of its second season, the British comedy got really interesting, with nearly half of the main characters having exhibited some form of queerness.

Class

A Hindi official remake of Spanish show Elite, Class is set in a prestigious secondary school in Delhi and chronicles around three middle-class peers and their far wealthier classmates. The show spotlights numerous social issues, ranging from homophobia to casteism and income disparity in India.

Please Like Me

This Australian dramedy series, created and mostly written by Josh Thomas, touches on some sad and all-too-realistic issues that come with adulthood, tackling themes of mental illness, sexuality, family and relationships. Thomas also plays the main character, a 20-something-year-old who, after being dumped by his girlfriend, realises he is gay.

LGBTQ+ Shows On Netflix Hong Kong: Queer Eye

Queer Eye

We loved the OG Fab Five team from the 2003 series, but I think we can all agree that Netflix’s reboot of Queer Eye has taken the series to a whole new level. Moving beyond just making over straight men, Johnathan, Tan, Karamo, Antoni and Bobby expand their specialised skills to better the lives of a diverse range of people in the communities they visit. Serving both comedic and tear-jerking moments, what really makes this show special is the heart the team put into what they do.

RuPaul’s Drag Race

With 15 seasons and a number of successful spin-offs under its belt, RuPaul’s Drag Race has become a beloved cult favourite. The sickening reality competition show, which by the finale sees one of the charismatic contestants crowned America’s Next Drag Superstar, combines the best of “America’s Next Top Model”, “Lip Sync Battle”, “Project Runway” and more. What’s not to love?

LGBTQ+ Shows Netflix Hong Kong Lifestyle: The Ultimatum

The Ultimatum: Queer Love

If you watched the previous season, Marry or Move On, you need to add the Queer Love edition to your list. Five long-term queer couples are put to the ultimate test to either tie the knot or move on and if this isn’t saucy reality TV, we don’t know what is!

LGBTQ+ Shows On Netflix Hong Kong: BONDING

BONDING

This dark and quirky comedy series follows Tiff (Zoe Levin), a psychology student by day and dominatrix by night, as she recruits her gay best friend from high school, Pete, to be her assistant. Their sexual high school history adds a layer of complexity to the relationship, ultimately offering more than the typical GBF trope ever did. Through their new business relationship, they form a more meaningful bond and, in the process, discover new aspects of themselves.

Tales of the City

This continuation of the 1993 miniseries of the same name (based on a series of novels by Armistead Maupin) follows the intersecting lives of several different queer San Franciscans. Set a couple of decades ahead of the original, the 2019 reboot drama touches on contemporary issues such as HIV prevention and treatment and has a more inclusive cast, including actors of colour, trans and gender-nonconforming actors and actors with disabilities.

LGBTQ+ Shows Netflix Hong Kong Lifestyle: Grace & Frankie

Grace and Frankie

Grace and Frankie’s lives are completely turned upside down when their husbands announce they are leaving them — for each other. The former rivals are then forced to live together and gradually grow closer as they come to grips with their new reality. The sitcom, in which Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin play the title roles, has become the longest-running Netflix original with seven seasons and 94 episodes.

Here’s everything to know about coral reef-safe sunscreen, sunblock, and SPF, including where to buy a bottle now in Hong Kong.

By now, we should all be aware of the importance of wearing sunscreen (FYI, you should really wear some form of UV protection daily, not just when you’re out in the sun!). But beyond that, have you ever stopped to consider what your choice of SPF is doing to our coral reefs and marine life? Here is what you should know about reef-safe sunscreen and sunblock, and the choices that promise to both protect our skin and the sea — all available to shop in Hong Kong.

What To Consider About Reef-Safe Sunscreen And The Sea

It’s a known fact that UV rays and sun exposure can cause sunburn, premature ageing and, worst yet, skin cancer; but we have to acknowledge that while we need to stay safe, our choice of sunscreen could be harming the environment in a big way. The numbers say it all: 14,000 tons of sunscreen are thought to wash into the oceans each year, while up to 82,000 chemicals from personal-care products may be tainting the seas.¹ These toxic ingredients not only lead to coral bleaching and the destruction of our reefs but can also detrimentally affect marine life.

So, what can we do about it? While there are many enemies of reefs (plastic pollution and sewage to name but a few), our choice of sunscreen is one factor that we can completely control, and immediately! Luckily, scientific advances have made it possible for us to opt for “reef-friendly” or reef-safe sunscreen and SPF products, which use physical UVA and UVB filters as opposed to harmful chemical ones.

How Do I Know If My SPF Is A Reef-Safe Sunscreen?

It’s important to note that the terms reef-safe and reef-friendly are not regulated, so you can’t always trust products with this description. A safer bet is to take a long, hard look at the ingredients list, and make sure to avoid sunscreen and sunblock² that contains the following:

  1. Products which contain petrolatum (commonly known as mineral oil), which is harmful, even fatal, to marine life and birds. It takes years to biodegrade.
  2. Oxybenzone, octinoxate, butylparaben and 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, which cause coral bleaching.³

While we can only hope that more countries will follow in Hawaii’s footsteps and pass a bill to ban sunscreen and sunblock that can harm coral reefs, as individuals we all have the power to make small changes by switching to products that don’t contain harmful ingredients. Here are a few of our favourites to help you get started…

¹Zachos, Elaina and Rosen, Eric. “What sunscreens are best for you—and the planet?”, National Geographic, 3 June, 2023.
²It’s common now to use the terms sunscreen and sunblock interchangeably, which we have done here for ease, but sunblock technically refers to SPF with a physical shield (i.e. block) and sunscreen refers to ones with chemical filters that absorb UV light and convert it into heat, which is then released from the skin. Many SPF products on the market today combine physical and chemical filters, as well as UVB and UVA-targetted filters. You can find out more here.

Gender and pronouns can be confusing! Here’s a quick guide to gender identity terms — for cisgender, transgender and non-binary peoples — so that the next time you see she/her or she/they pronouns, to name a few, in a bio, you’ll know what to do.

It may seem pretty straight(wink!)-forward, but referring to others by their correct pronouns is really the only way to be! It’s a sign you see them for who they are and that you acknowledge and respect them. This Pride Month, we’ve put together this handy guide to pronouns — talking you through gender identity terms and why they’re so important.

Sometimes, you’re just out of the loop — with newer ways of writing down how you identify popping up on the internet in various different places on our profiles (you might have noticed Sassy writers write our pronouns in our email signature!) all the time. And despite English being one of the less grammatically gendered languages (assigning nouns with gender categories, ie. masculine and feminine nouns), it’s still a troublesome tongue — and old grammar rules and the idea of plurals and singular pronouns can all be so confusing.

We reached out to Quarks — the first and “by far the only” organisation targeting Hong Kong transgender youth. Officially registered in 2020, the group provides peer support for the younger generation of the transgender community and promotes their visibility to the general public. A lot of members here have an intersection of LGBT+ identities apart from being transgender.

So what exactly is a “pronoun”, and a personal pronoun?

In English, a pronoun is how we refer to a noun. When you refer to a human, one person or more, that pronoun is called a personal pronoun. So when you refer to yourself or to someone else — you’re using a personal pronoun! We do it all the time, every day.

You’re probably most familiar with a pronoun as the term for a singular human being when you refer to them in the third person. He went there. She did that. It’s for him. This is hers. These terms have a gender implied, which isn’t always accurate or helpful.

Language, especially English, is always evolving, and always changing. Colloquial language, new-age slang and patois are all signs of immigration patterns, empire expansion, youth cultures and more: language marches on every day!

pronouns gender identity terms trans intersex lgbtqi lifestyle 3

The most commonly used personal pronouns are he/him, she/her and they/them. As Zephyrus Tsang, the co-founder and vice-chairperson of Quarks, who uses he/him pronouns, told us, they/them has been used for one person since the times of Shakespeare! It’s a great one when a gender of a person is not specified in conversation and the one to use when a person’s pronouns are not made aware to you and if a person has told you those are their pronouns.

The first step is probably using it in your own speech. This writer has always used they, their and them in academic essays — especially when I would sit in an exam hall and have no idea of the gender of someone I was analysing or criticising in my paper. If you pay attention, you’ll probably find you already use they and them when referring to one person, especially when you referring to a person within a hypothetical situation!

What tends to become more difficult is when you see a single person in front of you and instinctively go to gender them — and then lean towards a gendered pronoun to refer to them.

Let’s talk gender and gender identity.

Gender identity is a personal sense of one’s gender. Your sex assignment is how a person is labelled “male or female” according to the external genitalia seen when you’re born. This seems simple but our bodies aren’t all so clear-cut. Sometimes you’re born with a penis or a vagina and given the according sex assignment on your birth certificate. But because your sex isn’t pre-determined when you’re conceived, you could be born with internal and external anatomy that seems to match a different sex.

For example, cisgender men and women both have varying levels of testosterone but there’s an arbitrary marker of the amount that “splits us into men and women”. So more melanated women may have more testosterone than the average “white” woman (the Eurocentric median) but it doesn’t mean they automatically become men.

The umbrella term intersex is used for a variety of conditions in which a person is born with reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn’t seem to fit the typical definitions of female or male. You could have a vagina but your uterus didn’t develop fully. Intersex people are often assigned male or female, for some maybe after genital surgeries are performed when they’re born. Depending on the condition, they may manage this later on in life with hormone replacement therapy.

pronouns gender identity terms trans intersex lgbtqi lifestyle 5

Still with us? Let’s quickly run through a few more terms:

  • Cisgender means one’s gender identity is the same as the gender stereotypically associated with the sex assigned at birth. In other words, you were born with “female” reproductive organs and identify as female.
  • Transgender (or gender diverse, gender expansive, gender non-conforming) means one’s gender identity is not the same as the gender stereotypically associated with the sex assigned at birth.
  • Non-binary refers to gender identities that are not solely male or female.
  • Agender refers to the gender identity of not having a gender.

We ask Zephyrus Tsang of Quarks to comment on personal pronouns

Everyone can have pronouns. It is also possible that someone would like to be referred to by their name or a gender-neutral noun directly. It’s important to not assume one’s personal pronouns based on their gender expression or legal gender marker.

Knowing one’s pronouns allows us to refer to them respectfully in a social and practical context. We don’t need to dig into one’s personal experience with gender in order to know how to respect them. Each set of pronouns does not equal a specific set of gender expressions or gender identities. Thus, no assumption.

pronouns gender identity terms trans intersex lgbtqi lifestyle 6

It’s best to ask each person. For example, if a person states their pronouns to be she/they, it means the person feels it’s appropriate to be referred to by more than one set of pronouns, both she/her and they/them. Others might choose one set of pronouns for themselves or use she/her and they/them alternatively. Whether this person is “less feminine” because she uses more than one set of pronouns is not a must, and others don’t have any need to know.

Why is it important to use the correct pronouns and respect people’s pronouns?

It’s basic respect to refer to a person with the pronouns they’ve told you. It shows that person that they’re recognized for who they are in a social context. Actively saying your pronouns first helps to avoid any assumptions from others and encourages them to share their pronouns too. Sharing pronouns is not only for those who are hard to place.

No one should have their pronouns assumed — including cisgender people or people whose gender expression is typically male or female. One’s pronouns are subject to changes and fluidity. A constant update of one’s pronouns at every encounter is also useful. Stating one’s pronouns can also be important for foreigners, who may not know you or your name’s gender, especially for email conversations.

Pronouns are not legally binding. In doctor’s letters, reference letters, and even legal papers, use pronouns according to what is stated by the person. If this is not possible, you can at least refer to them by their name or a gender-neutral noun, instead of the wrong pronouns.

What is “misgendering” and how can it impact someone?

Misgendering is a disrespect of one’s gender identity. It often reveals that the speaker does not recognize one’s gender identity and sees them as the wrong gender. Misgendering can out a transgender person and confuse others. For example, a trans man may be outed in an unsafe way if she/her are used for documents, which insist on following a legal gender marker.

pronouns gender identity terms trans intersex lgbtqi lifestyle

How do I ask someone what pronouns they use?

“My pronouns are __. Can I know your pronouns, please?” No one should have their pronouns assumed, including yourself. It’s good to provide your own pronouns before asking.

Editor’s Note: You can always say “I go by she/her. What about you?”. It’s more about the message than the exact wording!

What if I make a mistake?

Make a brief apology, correct your sentence, and continue the conversation. Avoid making the same mistake again.

What about gender outside of English or the West? What are some traditional Eastern beliefs about gender?

There are a number of languages without any gendered pronouns. In Cantonese, the singular pronoun 佢 and the pleural pronoun 佢地 refer to everything, including everyone regardless of their gender identities, every animal and plant and every non-living object.

What are some resources I can use to learn more about gender identity and personal pronouns?

Apart from Googling, and reading gender-inclusive websites and social media accounts, most importantly, we have to listen carefully how people around us state and explain their pronouns and gender identity.
