Anytime you step into an elevator and press a button to whisk you up 72 floors, you know you’re in for a treat! And so, as tough as it sounds, that’s how this Sassy editor found herself enjoying some time out from an extraordinarily busy week for an afternoon of self-indulgence.

Arrive At W Hong Kong Early To Unwind

One of the best things about booking a treatment at W Hong Kong is making a proper spa experience out of your day. Make sure you arrive 45 minutes to an hour early to fully make use of all the Bliss Spa facilities on offer. Take a dip in the recently reopened WET® Deck or vitality pool with its spectacular views over Victoria Harbour and relax in the aroma steam room and Himalayan salt stone sauna.

Spa Couples Suite At Bliss Spa

After a quick questionnaire, I was ushered off to begin my spa day in the ultra-luxe couples spa suite. It’s fair to say this was a bit of a pinch-me moment. As I walked in, the scent of lemongrass, reminded me of tropical vacations and immediately put me into relaxation mode. Overlooking the urban jungle below, the private jacuzzi was piping hot and bubbling, all set for me to forget the stresses of the day. After what seemed like five minutes (but was actually half an hour!) the knock on the door came to signal it was time to start.

Massage And Body Scrub Treatments At Bliss Spa

I was treated to a body scrub followed by a full-body massage. I’d opted for gentle to medium pressure with relaxation as the goal, with the therapist kindly checking in regularly.

Turns out I’d been a bit more stressed than I thought, with the therapist expertly finding the exact point in my shoulder blade where I hold my tension. Intuitively knowing that she was causing some discomfort, she made sure to ask if everything was ok. While offering to back off if needed, she also reassured me that by gently working out those knots, I’d feel better in the long run. Spoiler alert — she was right.

Another nice touch was the paraffin foot treatment. I’ve always had terrible circulation and can feel my fingers turning to ice even as I type this now. Nothing a hot cup of tea can’t fix, but when it’s tingly toes, it can be quite the distraction on the massage bed. This part of the treatment was like a warm foot mask creating a cocoon from my ankles to my toes. Not only did I feel cosy, but my feet were left silky smooth.

A Gentle Reentry To The World

My two hours flew by way too quickly. Thankfully, my package also included a light lunch and a glass of Champagne in the relaxation room. Well needed because I certainly wasn’t ready to get back to the hustle and bustle of the real world! I took my time to kick back and flick through some magazines (research in case my boss asks why I was gone so long!). Any excuse to linger a little longer at Bliss.

Bliss Spa was everything you’d expect from a high-end spa, with well-appointed treatment rooms and expert therapists. The price point is comparable to other five-star hotels but do your research and jump on the packages with lots of extra inclusions. Think experience vouchers, complimentary Champagne, swimming pool access and more. I can definitely see myself booking a spa day with girlfriends or a romantic couples treatment with my other half.

We also made note of the aesthetically-pleasing neon signage accompanying the cryotherapy chamber — very Hong Kong!

Before The Treatment

My visit started by filling out an incredibly comprehensive form that let me note down my intended goals and any conditions (like infections and injuries) and former treatments that could interfere with or impact my experience (like microblading, laser hair removal, tattoos and piercings and so on). I was particularly concerned about skin allergies, as I suffer from chronic urticaria, but the manager assured me that as long as my condition wasn’t cold-triggered, the sub-zero temperature would actually be fine!

Alongside full-body cryotherapy, °CRYO Hong Kong offers localised cryotherapy and °CRYO facials, deep cleansing and pore-refining HydraFacials, facials in collaboration with cult favourite skincare brand SkinCeuticals (including brightening, customisable, and anti-glycation varieties), slimming, cellulite-targetted and muscle-toning treatments, compression therapy, red-light therapy, an infrared dry sauna and more.

The Signature Full-Body Cryotherapy Treatment

Once sorted out, I was given a soft and cosy bra and short co-ord and long thigh-high socks, and the choice between a beanie or ear muffs to protect the sensitive top part of my ear, plus moon boots and long gloves. I also made sure to remove my nose ring.

The fully-immersive chamber is definitely intimidating at first glance but feels bigger than it appears once you step inside. The door is just a simple push to open and is never locked. I trialled the “first-time” option, a two-minute guided session at -121°C. Surprisingly, it didn’t feel too cold! I moved a little bit to pass the time, and found the helpful energetic voiceover really put me at ease. My eyes are quite sensitive, so I simply closed them and covered them with my gloved hands.

Red Light Therapy

This is a non-invasive full-chamber treatment that exposes your body to red and near-infrared light to relieve pain, repair muscle tissue and accelerate recovery. In particular, clients have reported back improvement with conditions like arthritis and even their eyesight! It also stimulates collagen production.

The light is completely safe but super bright, so I closed my eyes and used the dark glasses provided for comfort. The chamber doesn’t close fully and is easy to push open should you wish. It didn’t feel claustrophobic, which was my major concern! This treatment was quite calming, not too hot or warm, especially after the cold treatment.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Perhaps the most interesting treatment, you head inside a chamber with a nasal cannula device that saturates your body with oxygen. This therapy promotes body healing, helping it to repair skin cells, regenerate new tissue, increase blood flow and improve circulation — strengthening your body from the inside out. It also helps you maintain mental sharpness and fight infection.

Final Thoughts

My most-anticipated treatment was the signature cryotherapy, as I had knee surgery over a year ago and am still in the process of rehabilitating it. Known for accelerating muscle recovery and relieving pain, as well as reducing stress and fatigue and improving sleep, the sub-zero temperature therapy was an enjoyable experience that was very soothing for my knee joint. You’d have to book a couple of sessions for full results, but overall I’d say it’s energising, stress-relieving and great for muscle pain.

What To Know About Botox

What Is Botox, Filler & An Injectable?

Botox is actually a brand name for botulinum toxin type A, an injectable neurotoxin that affects the nerves and causes muscle weakening. Botulinum toxin (temporarily!) blocks the signals from a nerve to a muscle, which means the injected muscles can’t contract and tense up. This relaxing and softening of the muscle results in a smoothening look to the skin and the prevention of fine lines and wrinkles, which are usually formed by muscle contraction. The effects are temporary but can last up to several months.

An “injectable” simply means a drug that can be put into the body using a needle and syringe. And a dermal “filler” is a gel-like substance that is injected beneath the skin for various reasons, most commonly for cosmetic purposes like creating volume, smoothening lines and softening creases and enhancing facial contours. Most injectable fillers are made of hyaluronic acid and last for about six months or longer.

The most common botulinum toxin is, of course, Botox. Other brands include Dysport and Xeomin which all work in similar ways.

What Is Botox Used For?

Injected in very small doses, botulinum toxin is most commonly known for reducing wrinkles and lines on the face — formed around the eyes, mouth and forehead when you frown, smile and squint. Lines may become less and less visible after each treatment as the muscles become less prominent, and you’re not just smoothening out already-formed lines but preventing new ones from appearing. It’s non-surgical, reliable and efficient.

Botulinum toxin can also be used to slim the face and lift and define the jawline, as well as on the neck to reduce vertical neck bands. In some places, you can even have diluted doses of botulinum toxin placed superficially just under the skin to reduce oiliness. You could also use it in the underarm area to reduce excessive sweating and to help with chronic migraines.

What Are The Side Effects & Risks Of Botox?

• While not very common, you may see reddening, swelling and minor bruising around the injection site.
• A headache and flu-like symptoms for the first 24 hours
• Administering too much botulinum toxin might result in a “frozen” or expressionless face, asymmetrical issues and even the drooping of the eyelids and eyebrows. Botox is temporary, so any of these issues will wear off.
• Very rarely, serious problems like blurred or double vision (if injected around the eyes) or breathing difficulties (if injected in the neck area) can happen.

When administered by a fully-trained physician, botulinum toxin can produce consistent, natural and predictable results. We all have different muscle strengths and placements so the treatment should be as personalised as possible. We can’t emphasise enough how important it is to consult a doctor you can trust. Concentration and dosage make all the difference. We’d highly suggest reading the Department of Health’s informational page on cosmetic procedures and referring to its list of registered medical practitioners.

What To Expect

Botulinum toxin injections are a nonsurgical, in-office treatment that requires minimal preparation. Your face will be cleaned and an anaesthetic numbing cream may be applied. The botulinum toxin will be injected into muscles using a very fine needle. The entire process usually takes less than 30 minutes and typically takes two or three days to begin seeing the effect.

While it requires no downtime, it’s best to avoid alcohol and vigorous exercise for 24 hours, massaging and rubbing the face for about three days and facials for about two weeks. Your practitioner should give you more detailed advice.

What To Know & Consider

• If you’re thinking about having botulinum toxin injections, it’s important to be super clear about why you want them. For example, you may achieve similar effects with skincare products and facial treatments. All procedures have some risks and if you’re disappointed with the outcome, this could impact your emotional well-being. We’d suggest giving this informational page a read.
• Do not get botulinum toxin injections if you have a skin infection, are unwell in any way, have a neuromuscular condition, and if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. It’s also a great idea to consider all medication you take — for example, antidepressants and antihistamines do not compromise Botox treatments but aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may.
• It’s not permanent — the effect will usually only last for three to four months (although it can last longer!)
• A single session is sufficient to see results. You may wait a few days to see an initial effect and it may take a week or two to be fully visible but that one session will be more than enough.
• Prices really vary in Hong Kong. While we’d ordinarily look to more affordable options, be wary of cheaper clinics that aren’t reputable and well-reviewed. Paying more and going through a licensed medical doctor is best — this is your face and body!
• Make sure the person doing your injections is qualified and experienced. Skip salons and go directly to a Hong Kong-registered doctor. Review before-and-after photos to check their previous work and look for independent reviews online.
• Schedule an initial consultation where you can express your needs and cosmetic desires to your practitioner. Make sure you’re comfortable with your doctor, and that their philosophy aligns with yours.
• Ask your practitioner about: their training, qualifications and experience; the name of the product, its license and where it’s made; risks and side-effects; and what will happen if things go wrong.
• Clarify any previous dosages, which brands you’ve used before and are using now, then work out which will be most suitable for your skin. Make sure to also let your practitioner know your medical history, any allergies and all medical conditions.
• Be wary of clinics that pressure you to purchase a higher injection dosage.
