Here’s everything to know about coral reef-safe sunscreen, sunblock, and SPF, including where to buy a bottle now in Hong Kong.

By now, we should all be aware of the importance of wearing sunscreen (FYI, you should really wear some form of UV protection daily, not just when you’re out in the sun!). But beyond that, have you ever stopped to consider what your choice of SPF is doing to our coral reefs and marine life? Here is what you should know about reef-safe sunscreen and sunblock, and the choices that promise to both protect our skin and the sea — all available to shop in Hong Kong.

What To Consider About Reef-Safe Sunscreen And The Sea

It’s a known fact that UV rays and sun exposure can cause sunburn, premature ageing and, worst yet, skin cancer; but we have to acknowledge that while we need to stay safe, our choice of sunscreen could be harming the environment in a big way. The numbers say it all: 14,000 tons of sunscreen are thought to wash into the oceans each year, while up to 82,000 chemicals from personal-care products may be tainting the seas.¹ These toxic ingredients not only lead to coral bleaching and the destruction of our reefs but can also detrimentally affect marine life.

So, what can we do about it? While there are many enemies of reefs (plastic pollution and sewage to name but a few), our choice of sunscreen is one factor that we can completely control, and immediately! Luckily, scientific advances have made it possible for us to opt for “reef-friendly” or reef-safe sunscreen and SPF products, which use physical UVA and UVB filters as opposed to harmful chemical ones.

How Do I Know If My SPF Is A Reef-Safe Sunscreen?

It’s important to note that the terms reef-safe and reef-friendly are not regulated, so you can’t always trust products with this description. A safer bet is to take a long, hard look at the ingredients list, and make sure to avoid sunscreen and sunblock² that contains the following:

  1. Products which contain petrolatum (commonly known as mineral oil), which is harmful, even fatal, to marine life and birds. It takes years to biodegrade.
  2. Oxybenzone, octinoxate, butylparaben and 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, which cause coral bleaching.³

While we can only hope that more countries will follow in Hawaii’s footsteps and pass a bill to ban sunscreen and sunblock that can harm coral reefs, as individuals we all have the power to make small changes by switching to products that don’t contain harmful ingredients. Here are a few of our favourites to help you get started…

¹Zachos, Elaina and Rosen, Eric. “What sunscreens are best for you—and the planet?”, National Geographic, 3 June, 2023.
²It’s common now to use the terms sunscreen and sunblock interchangeably, which we have done here for ease, but sunblock technically refers to SPF with a physical shield (i.e. block) and sunscreen refers to ones with chemical filters that absorb UV light and convert it into heat, which is then released from the skin. Many SPF products on the market today combine physical and chemical filters, as well as UVB and UVA-targetted filters. You can find out more here.

A rejuvenating facial treatment, Emface is an aesthetic procedure that contours the face, reduces the look of wrinkles and improves your skin laxity, all as it tones and lifts your muscles and skin!

So what makes it so revolutionary? It’s totally non-invasive, using absolutely no needles from start to finish. Emface is also the first and only device that simultaneously treats the facial skin and muscles, emitting monopolar radio frequency (RF) and high-intensity facial electromagnetic stimulation (HIFES), providing supramaximal contraction.

The medical-grade product uses homogeneous heating to target your facial layers with dynamic “impedance” technology, inducing depolarization of motor neurons’ membrane. All this complicated cutting-edge tech results in increased collagen production and elastin fibres, remodelling and smoothening out the skin — improving the overall appearance and texture!

What To Know About Aluminium-Free Natural Deodorants

Brands have been experimenting with different formulations for natural deodorants for a while! But making the switch still might not be as simple as you may first think. If you’ve been using regular antiperspirants for years, your underarms will go through a transition period as they adjust to their new, all-natural, environmentally-friendly way of odour-free life.

Read More: 5 All-Natural DIY Tips For You And Your Home

What’s the difference between deodorant and antiperspirant?

Your sweat itself doesn’t have a bad odour — until it mixes with bacteria on your skin. Deodorants and antiperspirants work in different ways to mask or prevent this bad smell.

  • Deodorants block or mask body odour with a presumably more pleasant scent. They may also create a more acidic environment where applied, which may prevent the bacteria from releasing odours.
  • Antiperspirants use ingredients, usually aluminium-based, to block sweat glands, reducing the amount of perspiration released.

The Pros: It’s All-Natural!

These deodorants are all-natural and botanical-based, which means they should be free of any excessive and unnecessary chemicals. Instead, ingredients like charcoal, mineral-rich clays and plant-based butters and oils promise to be gentler on the skin.

It’s worth noting there is no substantial scientific evidence to support the claim that aluminium-based antiperspirants may increase the risk of developing breast cancer.

The Pros: It’s Environmentally-Friendly

Some traditional formulas contain the antimicrobial agent triclosan, which accumulates in our rivers and streams after being washed from our bodies. This may negatively impact the environment (and us, although there is no clear evidence at present). What is clearer, however, is that antiperspirants tend to come in non-recyclable and non-refillable packaging.

The Cons: Your Body May Need Time To Adjust

If your underarms are used to regular-strength antiperspirants, changing to natural, simpler products could come with a detox journey. With no aluminium compound to “plug” your sweat glands, they’ll be exposed again. You may experience a seemingly substantial increase in the growth of odour-causing bacteria and excessive sweating — but these levels should normalise and your underarms should fully adjust.

The Cons: It Takes A Little Trial And Error

There’s now a wide range of natural alternatives on the market, coming in various formulas and with different ingredients. This means it can be a little bit of a hassle to find one that truly is for you — what works for one person may not work for everyone! Take some time to experiment and test the options available.

Spa Couples Suite At Bliss Spa

After a quick questionnaire, I was ushered off to begin my spa day in the ultra-luxe couples spa suite. It’s fair to say this was a bit of a pinch-me moment. As I walked in, the scent of lemongrass, reminded me of tropical vacations and immediately put me into relaxation mode. Overlooking the urban jungle below, the private jacuzzi was piping hot and bubbling, all set for me to forget the stresses of the day. After what seemed like five minutes (but was actually half an hour!) the knock on the door came to signal it was time to start.

Massage And Body Scrub Treatments At Bliss Spa

I was treated to a body scrub followed by a full-body massage. I’d opted for gentle to medium pressure with relaxation as the goal, with the therapist kindly checking in regularly.

Turns out I’d been a bit more stressed than I thought, with the therapist expertly finding the exact point in my shoulder blade where I hold my tension. Intuitively knowing that she was causing some discomfort, she made sure to ask if everything was ok. While offering to back off if needed, she also reassured me that by gently working out those knots, I’d feel better in the long run. Spoiler alert — she was right.

Another nice touch was the paraffin foot treatment. I’ve always had terrible circulation and can feel my fingers turning to ice even as I type this now. Nothing a hot cup of tea can’t fix, but when it’s tingly toes, it can be quite the distraction on the massage bed. This part of the treatment was like a warm foot mask creating a cocoon from my ankles to my toes. Not only did I feel cosy, but my feet were left silky smooth.

A Gentle Reentry To The World

My two hours flew by way too quickly. Thankfully, my package also included a light lunch and a glass of Champagne in the relaxation room. Well needed because I certainly wasn’t ready to get back to the hustle and bustle of the real world! I took my time to kick back and flick through some magazines (research in case my boss asks why I was gone so long!). Any excuse to linger a little longer at Bliss.

Final thoughts On W Hong Kong’s Bliss Spa

Bliss Spa was everything you’d expect from a high-end spa, with well-appointed treatment rooms and expert therapists. The price point is comparable to other five-star hotels but do your research and jump on the packages with lots of extra inclusions. Think experience vouchers, complimentary Champagne, swimming pool access and more. I can definitely see myself booking a spa day with girlfriends or a romantic couples treatment with my other half.

So you’ve made the measured decision to get Botox, but which one? High Society Skin Clinic now offers the new generation XEOMIN® purified botulinum toxin, which promises to soften the skin and smooth out fine lines.

High Society Skin Clinic offers every service from eyebrow microblading and tinting to lash extensions, semi-permanent makeup, facials, body sculpting, laser hair removal and more. So it’s no surprise that the aesthetic centre’s also a leading professional in injectables — including botulinum toxin.

Xeomin is often referred to as Botox, the catch-all brand name. But make no mistake! It’s a new generation cosmetic injectable that’ll soften the skin, smoothening out fine lines and wrinkles, with fewer risks than Botox. Read on to learn more about Xeomin, what to book at High Society Skin Clinic and an exclusive perk for Sassy readers!

What is Xeomin?

Xeomin is a neurotoxin with the active ingredient of botulinum toxin type A — just like Botox However, Xeomin is free of impurities and additives, giving you the full benefits of botulinum toxin but with a lower risk of antibody formation that could cause toxin resistance during repeat treatments — which would lead to less effective treatment.

Working as a neuromodulator primarily to smoothen out fine lines and wrinkles, it’s injected into your muscles to decrease movement. It differs from filler, which is usually a hyaluronic acid-based gel-like substance that’s injected beneath the skin and creates volume and fills out an area (which also helps to smoothen out lines and soften creases!).

Xeomin is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, UK MHRA, Germany’s Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices, and the Hong Kong Department of Health. It’s also highly effective and clinically proven to see results in two to four days.

Why High Society Skin Clinic?

At High Society Skin Clinic, you can expect high-quality and professional service with injection procedures done by a Hong Kong-registered medical doctor.

When administered by a fully-trained physician, botulinum toxin can produce consistent, natural and predictable results. And as we all have different muscle strengths and placements, the treatment should be as personalised as possible — concentration and dosage make all the difference. So, of course, you’ll have a comprehensive consultation with your doctor before the procedure.

What To Expect & Get At High Society Skin Clinic

As a non-surgical, in-office treatment, Xeomin injections require minimal preparation. Your face will be cleaned and an anaesthetic numbing cream will be applied. The botulinum toxin will be injected into muscles using a very fine needle. The entire process usually takes less than 30 minutes and typically takes two days to see an effect.

High Society Skin Clinic’s Xeomin injections ($2,000 to $4,500) have been clinically proven to relax the muscles and temporarily eliminate dynamic wrinkles like glabellar lines, ones on the forehead and “crow’s feet” fine lines around the eyes for up to six months.

With over 25 years of experience, the piercers here are professional and confident, and will sterilise tools in front of you to ensure safety and cleanliness. Let them walk you through your piercing method and placement, as well as detailed aftercare.

Instead, reach out ahead of time and make an appointment with Jason Choi who’ll talk you through placement and process. While you’re there, there’s no harm in having a look at the tattoos on offer too — just don’t get them at the same time.

What To Know About Getting A Piercing In Hong Kong

  • Do some research before getting pierced — about the type of piercing, how you will be pierced (say, with a piercing gun or needle plus the method of piercing!), and the expected pain and time it’ll take to heal.
  • Eat something before you go. It keeps your blood sugar steady so you won’t get dizzy or faint. And try to get a good night of sleep.
  • Have your piercer walk you through the way you’ll be pierced and show you how everything is sterilised. Discuss placement and the first jewellery you’ll be fitted with and when you can change the jewellery. It’s worth paying more for titanium or gold for your piercing.
  • Expect a little pain! Better to be mentally prepared and ready than to be shocked.
  • Aftercare is so important! It’s not worth neglecting a part of your body and having a piercing close up, or worse. A piercing is a wound of some sort and infections can leave real scars on your face and body! Make sure to consult your piercer about their recommended ways of cleaning and disinfecting your piercing, and how to take care of it. If you’re unsure, reach out to them after with any updates and don’t be afraid to ask “silly” questions — like their favourite products and methods!
  • Don’t worry if you see a little bleeding or irritation, but keep an eye out for anything wrong, like a lot of discolouration, secretion of white, yellow to green fluid, heat, swelling and excessive pain.
