A closer look at exactly what’s on offer at TIA Wellness Resort in Da Nang, Vietnam

Da Nang has long topped our holiday lists. So much so that it was the first holiday this Team Sassy member booked post-pandemic! After an affordable, two-hour direct flight you can be sitting beachside, relaxing with a cocktail in hand or exploring the lantern-lined lanes of historic Hoi An. Not to mention munching on the fresh fragrant flavours Vietnamese cuisine is famous for.

TIA Wellness Resort

Just a short drive from Da Nang International Airport, we arrive at TIA Wellness Resort and are immediately struck by the boutique look and feel of the all-villa property. The lobby and main restaurant have a chic, modern Vietnamese design that flows through the picturesque gardens leading to the beachside infinity pool.

Despite its photogenic position by the sand, the pool is surprisingly quiet thanks to each villa having a private pool (more on that later!). We took full advantage, diving straight in! Likewise, we were able to lap it up, relaxing in the crystal clear waters of the South China Sea.

Breathwork, Yoga And Wellness Activities At TIA Wellness Resort

A unique concept, TIA Wellness Resort offers complimentary wellness classes for all guests. It offers daily breathwork, Tai Chi, yoga and creative workshops.

Hosted in a bright and airy studio within the spa sanctuary, the breathwork class was held to the meditative sounds of the waterfall, palm trees moving in the breeze and the melodic hum of the cicadas and birds. As we were all beginners, the instructor guided us through the basics, easing us into relaxation for the day ahead.

The session I was most curious about, if not a little sceptical about (if I’m being honest) was the creative workshop. Colouring with my kids aside, neither my husband nor I are the most artistic people. We went in with an open mind (and perhaps a few jokes about our creative capabilities). The workshop was surprisingly relaxing, as we were guided through colour choices to match our feelings and given a variety of mediums to work with.

No, I will not be showing you my masterpiece. But, in a turn that could only be described as fate, the session concluded with my husband and I revealing our very, VERY similar works of art. I’m going to assume it’s because we are soulmates so in tune with each other’s feelings rather than the sheer coincidence of a shared beachside view out the window (we both created ocean waves and sunsets in case you were wondering!).

Included Spa Treatments At TIA Wellness Resort

We couldn’t visit an all-inclusive resort without sampling the spa menu. Every guest has access to up to two spa treatments (to a maximum of 80 minutes) every day from a treatment menu with a variety of both 50-minute and 30-minute options.

Our session started with a private visit to the new and modern spa facilities. There are DIY scrubs to choose from, one of the most hypnotic steam rooms I’ve ever seen (the colour-changing lights on the ceiling were a lovely touch), a sauna overlooking the lush tropical garden, plus a shower room with a rain shower, Vichy shower bed and massage jets. Our 30 minutes was up all too quickly but set us up well for our treatments ahead.

We were led through to our couples’ room full of natural light. We both chose a 50-minute body massage (Himalayan salt stone for me and deep-tissue sports massage for him), followed by a 30-minute head and shoulder massage. Our experienced therapists knew exactly what they were doing and there’s a good chance one of us may have nodded off.

Wellness Cuisine

A huge part of visiting Vietnam is the food. Personally, I’d start every day with a cà phê sữa dá (Vietnamese iced coffee) if I could! As a health and wellness resort, I was curious to see the menu offerings. TIA Wellness Resort caters for all diets, from those on a full cleanse to those looking to indulge.

I was struck by the diversity of what was on offer at the breakfast buffet. There were vegan options and healthy wellness options (fresh spring rolls, chia puddings, protein balls and more) for those keeping it light. On the flip side, the traditional holiday treats — eggs, bacon, croissants and pastries were also available. Plus an al a carte option and made-to-order Vietnamese and barista coffees. Everything was delicious!

We also sampled the vegan lunch options at The Ocean Bistro. The poolside restaurant had a breezy, coastal feel to it and dished up innovative plant-based plates.

Private Pool Villas At TIA Wellness Resort

While we didn’t spend the night at TIA, we were treated to a sneak peek at its stunning private pool villas. No wonder the beachside pool was quiet — the villas are your own little sanctuary! With sleek and spacious interiors coupled with your own plunge pool, there’s little reason to leave. Well, except for those spa and wellness treatments!

Plus, if you miss the breakfast buffet you can order from the in-room dining menu at any time or snack from the included wellness-inspired mini bar.

Final thoughts on TIA Wellness Resort, Da Nang

Having visited Da Nang (and Vietnam in general) many times over the last decade or so I can safely say this is a property I’ll be coming back to. I particularly love that it caters for all wellness interests and mixed abilities. If you are someone looking to dive into cleanses, detox and daily yoga there are programmes available. At the same time if your travel companion is more interested in cocktails by the pool and a good massage they won’t be disappointed either.

I may already be planning a solo retreat for my next long weekend!

Taipei might be the obvious choice for a weekend in Taiwan, so mix it up a little by visiting the harbourside city of Kaohsiung. And if you’ve had a run of misfortune, be sure to include the twin Dragon and Tiger Pagodas on your sightseeing list — it’s said that entering through the mouth of the dragon and exiting the tiger can reverse your fortunes!

Often overlooked as travellers make a beeline to the temples of Angkor Wat, Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh offers travellers a gritty view into Cambodian history and culture. The Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda are hard to miss as you explore the riverfront but it’s telling that two of the city’s other big tourist attractions make for quite sombre visits. The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum certainly give travellers a wake-up call to this Cambodia’s very recent history. Once you’ve acknowledged the tragic past, you can marvel at the leaps and bounds this young nation has made in the past 4o years. There’s an emerging foodie scene and arts scene as well as bustling markets and nightlife. Be sure to visit a rooftop bar at sunset to watch day turn to night over the Mekong and Tonle Sap Rivers.

After the rollercoaster ride that was 2022, who would say no to a stay at The Farm at San Benito?

Imagining a weekend of relaxing by the pool, maybe a yoga class and massage in a lovely resort in the Philippines, I was quick to say yes to a quick trip to The Farm at San Benito. A bit of time out to set the tone for the new year ahead. Without wanting to sound too dramatic about it, The Farm at San Benito was so much more…

I love a spot of yoga and will never say no to a good spa treatment. However, when it comes to crystals and chakras, juice detoxes and vegan living, I’m a bit more sceptical. But I’ll try anything once! The beauty of a stay at The Farm at San Benito is there is something for everyone’s interpretation of wellness. There are options for those seeking a complete lifestyle overhaul and those who want a simple holiday retreat with healthy food, relaxation and mindfulness and fitness.

Wellness At The Holistic Sanctuary

What sets this destination apart is the Holistic Sanctuary, a medical centre that offers everything from general consultations, nutritional advice and digestive cleanses supervised by a team of onsite doctors to physiotherapy, chiropractic, acupuncture and reiki, psychology and psychoemotional healing. There are programmes and packages covering all sorts of health issues including long Covid recovery, sleep induction, stress reduction and hormonal balance.

The options can seem quite overwhelming, but at the heart of each package is a personalised, medically supervised treatment plan. The helpful team will guide you through the options and help build your perfect retreat.

Tested Treatments At The Holistic Sanctuary

My treatments started with the Live Blood Analysis which involved a finger prick blood droplet being examined under a microscope. While not diagnostic, it was interesting to see the blood cells interact giving insight and direction to other health conversations.

This was followed by a Voice Analysis where I spoke into a microphone for around a minute, followed by the doctor’s interpretation of my personality, mental and physical health. I still have no idea how it works, but the results were scarily accurate and some of the personality traits (both positive and negative) definitely struck close to home. Like the Blood Analysis, the results help form a broader picture of your health and areas for improvement.

Finally, I spent some time in the Vital Dome infra-red sauna. A strange experience as you lie down, in a dimly lit room with peaceful music playing, covered by the dome with just your head out. On the “detox” setting, the heat went up to 65º C, sending my heart racing and letting my body sweat out the toxins. I’m still trying to decide whether it felt like a relaxing meditation or an intense workout. Yes, very conflicting concepts, but I would absolutely do it again

Healing Sanctuary Spa And Aqua Sanctuary

No retreat would be complete without a visit (or two or three!) to the spa and the Healing Sanctuary and Aqua Sanctuary did not disappoint. I tried the signature Purification Treatment which was a simply divine combination body scrub and massage.

Next up was Aqua Therapy, a two-hour onsen-like experience. The time was spent being guided from the saunas and steam rooms through different water jets and onsen pools, before finishing up with an infrared foot sauna and shoulder massage. It was relaxing and meditative and something I’d highly recommend.

There is a range of rooms, suites and villas to suit your style. My room was a Banaba Deluxe in the newest section of the resort. It was lovely and comfortable and I really enjoyed waking up to the sounds and views of the forest. It is near a new section of the resort that is being constructed (with exciting things to come!) and a bit of a walk to the main areas so if I were to stay again I’d look into the villas which enjoy a private garden and some with their own pools.

Gangtey Lodge — Bhutan

It doesn’t get more secluded than Gangtey Lodge. Tucked away in the Himalayas, the Kingdom of Bhutan has always had a mysterious edge and a hefty price tag that keeps away the masses. It’s difficult NOT to disconnect from the fast-paced Hong Kong life as you immerse yourself in nature by hiking the foothills to traditional villages, unwinding with an in-suite fire-side massage and getting in touch with your spirituality by learning more about the ancient Buddhist traditions.

Ananda in the Himalayas — India

The benefits of Indian wellness regimes like Ayurveda, yoga and Vedanta are well-known, so travelling to India’s spiritual heart for that authentic retreat makes sense. Choose to stay for just a few nights to enjoy the tranquil surroundings, or make the most of your visit by committing to a longer programme. There are five-day beginner packages that give you a kick-start to detox, de-stress and renew, or start your commitment to yoga or a more active lifestyle. For something a bit more in-depth, look at a week (or more!) to fully focus on your health and well-being. A typical day begins with morning meditations, nature walks and yoga, followed by an afternoon filled with spa treatments and relaxation. Absolute bliss!

Get There: Fly direct to Delhi. From there you can drive four to five hours (traffic dependent), or fly to Dehradun (about 45 minutes plus a 40-minute drive).

Quick Flights From Hong Kong: City Break Seoul South Korea

Seoul, South Korea

Filled with coffee houses, bars and plenty of places to shop, Seoul is a great city for those who love to wander through streets and discover cool and quirky independent boutiques. Needless to say, the food is also incredible. Get ready to fill up on Korean barbecue, Korean fried chicken and a whole lot of beer! We recommend the Korean BBQ chain Maple Tree House, which has a few locations across the city.

To explore the culture, reserve some time to visit the Leeum Museum of Art, which has contemporary, modern art and interactive exhibits along with traditional pieces. The building alone is pretty impressive, with plenty to gawk at as you walk through.

Sassy Tip: Seoul also happens to be one of the most credit-card friendly cities in the world, with pretty much everywhere (including taxis) accepting contactless card payments, so there’s no need to carry around lots of foreign currency if you’re only going for a short trip!

Fly To: Incheon International Airport
Flight Time: 3 hours, 40 minutes
Best For: A cool and modern city break, juxtaposed alongside the old Seoul, highlighted by areas such as Bukchon Hanok Village and the Gyeongbokgung Palace.

Quick Flights From Hong Kong: City Break Tokyo Japan

Tokyo, Japan

With so much to do, see and eat, Japan’s capital city is a buzzing metropolis of activities! Make a trip to Tsukiji Fish Market and try to get there as early as possible (the tuna auction is a trilling watch, but starts at 3am!). It’s the best place to pick up some amazingly fresh seafood – think massive oysters, incredible sushi and sashimi, along with wholesale fish to purchase. In the evening, try to scope out a couple of Tokyo’s small bars or izakaya for a backstreet brew!

If you want to catch the famous Sakura (cherry blossom) that lines the streets, try to visit Tokyo in April. Ueno Park is beautiful when in full bloom. Explore the lake in a pedalo or rowing boat, which are available to hire, and don’t forget to check out the buzzing food market during Sakura season. If you’re a gamer at heart, you’ll definitely want to pay a visit to one of Tokyo’s arcades. Many are open 24-hours a day and have floors full of all imaginable games, great to have a go at (or you can just watch the experts!).

Sassy Tip: If you’re travelling to Japan for a week or more, I would also suggest purchasing a JR pass (prices start at around $1,700 for a seven-day pass), and can be used on JR lines in Tokyo and to travel further afield via the Shinkansen (bullet train).

Fly To: Tokyo Narita International Airport is a little further out from the city (about 50 minutes via the Narita Express) but has more flights available – or Tokyo Haneda International Airport is only about 8km away from Tokyo Station
Flight Time: 4 hours, 20 minutes
Best For: Sushi, sake and sakura

Quick Flights From Hong Kong: City Break Taipei Taiwan

Taipei, Taiwan

One of the shortest flights from HK, it’s easy to hop on HK Express or a China Airlines flight straight after work on Friday and be back in time for Monday morning. The streets of Taipei are great to explore by foot and the famous night markets are a must. With street food galore, make sure you fill up on Pepper Pork Buns and other delights from Raohe Street Market after a day of window gazing and shopping in Taipei 101.

Fly To: Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport
Flight Time: 1 hour, 50 minutes
Best For: Street food and stationery
Sassy Tip:
If you’re able to stay for a couple extra days and want to get out of the city, catch a train to Hualien (around two and a half hours away), rent a scooter and spend the day cruising and taking in the epic scenery from the lookout spot at Qingshui Cliffs.

Quick Flights From Hong Kong: City Break Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Choosing between Vietnam’s main cities can be tricky, but you can’t go wrong either way. Ho Chi Minh’s airport is much bigger compared to Hanoi’s, so it’s generally cheaper to fly there directly from Hong Kong. Watch out for zooming motorcycles as you explore the city.

There’s a lot of culture to soak up in Ho Chi Minh city – history buffs can visit the War Remnants Museum, which contains exhibits relating to the First Indochina War and the Vietnam War. Food-wise, you can find a mix of traditional and fusion cuisine. Taking its cue from the French, the city boasts a number of rooftop bars and restaurants that sty open till late.

Fly To: Tan Son Nhat International Airport
Flight Time: 2 hours, 45 minutes
Best For: History buffs and nightlife

Quick Flights From Hong Kong: City Break Singapore

Singapore

Want to experience the “Crazy Rich Asians” life? Book a stay at Marina Bay Sands (Or Raffles if you really want to splash out!), where you lounge by the Insta-famous infinity pool. Lucky for your wallet, it’s free to visit Gardens by the Bay and to watch the light show, and food from the Hawker centres (like Newton Food Centre, which was featured in the movie) are crazy cheap, so you won’t have to completely break the bank.

Fly To: Singapore Changi Airport
Flight Time: 3 hours, 4 minutes
Best For: Hawker centres and shopping

Long Holidays:

Bhutan travel 2020

Public Holiday: Chinese New Year – Monday, 27 January to Tuesday, 28 January
Destination: Bhutan
Annual leave days used: 3
Total days holiday: 9 (Saturday, 25 January to Sunday, 2 February)

Largely cut off from the rest of the world until the 1960s, Bhutan has claimed the number one spot in Lonely Planet’s best countries to travel to in 2020. And though only one international airport and limited airlines service the country (with a stopover in either Nepal, Singapore, India or Thailand required from Hong Kong), the trip promises to be worth the travel. Keeping the extra travel time in mind, Chinese New Year may just be the perfect time to explore Bhutan; as for just three annual leave days, travellers can score nine days holiday! The country operates a strict “high-value, low-impact” tourism policy, with daily fees required, meaning that it is relatively untouched compared to other tourist hotspots. We recommend working with a travel agent to help with your flight itinerary, tourism fees and other logistics, so all you have to do is look forward to exploring the “Last Shangri-La”. Expect mountain trails, Buddhist monasteries, stunning scenery and plenty of local culture.

England travel 2020

Public Holiday: Tuen Ng Festival – Thursday, 25 June, and HKSAR Establishment Day – Wednesday, 1 July
Destination: England
Annual leave days used: 5
Total days holiday: 11 (Thursday, 25 June to Sunday, 5 July)

Coming second only to Bhutan, England also claimed one of the top spots on Lonely Planet’s best countries for the year ahead. With many Hongkongers having ties to the country, we think that 2020 is the perfect opportunity to spend some time getting better acquainted with the leafy land. And though you can never quite predict England’s tricky weather, planning a trip during the summer months will hopefully give you a few fine days (along with a break from Hong Kong’s humidity!). With Tuen Ng Festival falling on Thursday, 25 June, and HKSAR Establishment Day following shortly after, by linking the two public holidays you can get an 11-day holiday for just five days leave! Meaning that long summer days, pub lunches and picnics in the park are more of a reality than you might have thought. Along with exploring the capital, England’s coastline is not to be missed for first-time visitors.

Kochi travel 2020

Public Holiday: National Day – Thursday, 1 October and The day following the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival – Friday, 2 October
Destination: Kochi, India
Annual leave days used: 3
Total days holiday: 9 (Saturday, 26 September to Sunday, 4 October)

Rated by Lonely Planet as one of the best cities to explore in 2020, Kochi, India should be high on your list. Located in Kerala, the vibrant city can be reached from Hong Kong via a stopover in Bangalore – offering the perfect excuse to explore another city for a day or two! The relaxed southern city differs from busier Indian destinations with its laid back vibe. Don’t miss checking out the giant Chinese fishing nets, and taking the time to walk the streets and explore the unique mix of Portuguese, Dutch and old English architecture. Expect colourful side streets, lazy art cafes and heritage hotels. Kochi is also only a short distance from the famed Kerala backwaters, so is the perfect launch pad for a day or overnight visit. A trip at the end of September coincides with the end of monsoon season, with temperatures averaging between 24°C and 30°C.

Cape Winelands travel 2020

Public Holiday: Christmas and New Year’s Day – Friday, 25, December and Friday, 1 January
Destination: Cape Winelands, South Africa
Annual leave days used: 8
Total days holiday: 16 (Saturday, 19 December to Sunday, 3 January)

Although temperatures rarely drop into single figures in Hong Kong, we still love the thought of escaping for some winter sun. And as one of Lonely Planet’s Best Value options for 2020, we think that South Africa’s Cape Winelands are the perfect choice. With opposite seasons to us, December is peak tourist time in the country for good reason, so it’s a great time to make a long-haul trip. To reach the Cape Winelands, travellers from Hong Kong can fly to Cape Town, with a stopover in Johannesburg. We recommend spending a few days exploring the city before escaping to the region for a Christmas trip that’s sure to be remembered. Found just a two-hour drive from the capital city, historic towns such Franschhoek and Stellenbosch are not to be missed. A dream for gourmands, both areas are renowned for the stella wine produced, alone with their abundance of restaurants and beautiful landscapes.

Long Weekend Getaways:

Siargao travel 2020

Public Holiday: Easter – Friday, 10 April to Monday, 13 April
Destination: Siargao, Philippines
Annual leave days used: 1
Total days holiday: 5 (Thursday, 9 April to Monday, 13 April)

Looking for somewhere a little closer to home to travel to next year? Siargao, the (fairly) undiscovered idyllic island in the South-East of the Philippines is high on our list. Plus, it has been highly rated by Condé Nast Traveller as a top holiday destination for 2020. Although it requires a connecting flight from either Cebu or Manila, you can keep travel time down to about 6-7 hours in total. So, if you’re looking for a long weekend getaway for sand, sea, sun and surf (and have already ticked off the likes of Thailand and Bali), we think that this lesser-known island is a great choice. March to October is dry season, so Easter is the perfect time to book in. And though you may want to plan a longer trip away, for only one day of annual leave, you’ll be able to get five days off (if you use the public holiday days wisely)! Once you’ve reached this tropical paradise, look forward to spending your days surfing and exploring the island on bike or foot, along with activities such as wakeboarding, kite surfing and tasting the array of local and international cuisine on offer.

Kyoto travel 2020

Public Holiday: Birthday of the Buddha – Thursday, 30 April, and Labour Day – Friday, 1 May
Destination: Kyoto, Japan
Annual leave days used: 0
Total days holiday: 4 (Thursday, 30 April to Sunday, 3 May)

After just hosting the 2019 Rugby World Cup, and with the Olympics to come in summer 2020, Japan is sure to be a popular choice for travel next year. And bringing the best of old world charm and modern city life, the ancient city of Kyoto is a top choice. Reachable in just four hours by flight (to Osaka Kansai International airport and then a 50-minute drive to the city), it’s a good option for a shorter city break. Don’t have annual leave days to use? You can still bag yourself a four-day holiday by linking the Birthday of the Buddha and Labour Day public holidays in early May. Main attractions include the city’s numerous classical Buddhist temples, gardens, imperial palaces, Shinto shrines and traditional wooden houses. And a trip during spring may even grant you some Insta snaps of the beautiful sakura (cherry blossom) which blooms all over the country between March and May. Plus, like any Japanese city, foodies will be well taken care of here. If travelling on by train, don’t miss the famed “Ramen Street” in Kyoto station.

Guizhou Province travel 2020

Public Holiday: The day following Chung Yeung Festival – Monday, 26 October
Destination: Guizhou Province, China
Annual leave days used: 0
Total days holiday: 3 (Saturday, 24 October to Monday, 26 October)

With a flight time of just over two hours from Hong Kong, Guizhou is ideal for a short break. Lesser known to international travellers, this Chinese province has claimed a spot on Lonely Planet’s top regions to travel to for 2020 and is a great choice for those who may have already travelled to other parts of the vast country. The capital city of Guiyang promises everything from streets brimming with food stalls, to artisan businesses, cafes and craft bars. In the countryside, you’ll also find quaint, unchanged villages along with two of the country’s largest and most spectacular natural features – a waterfall and a cave. We suggest booking the evening Hong Kong airlines flight from the city on Friday, 23 October, to maximise your time exploring.
