We get our burger cravings satisfied at Power Burger’s newest Central location.

Since quietly opening its first post in Sham Shui Po at the end of 2021, Power Burger found success serving its own formidable take on the humble burger. It’s one thing to enter the ring of established burger joints in the city (during the pandemic no less), and another feat to stay in it. But with a passion for high quality ingredients, it’s managed to hold its own, now with a takeaway shop in Sai Ying Pun, on the corner of Water Street and Third Street, and its second location in Central.

We ducked out of the office to visit the Central location for lunch and ate our fill of burgers, fries and milkshakes. Read on to find out what we thought!

Power Burger Central Restaurant Review: Location, Aberdeen Street

Comfy Cool Spot In Central

Seek out the bright orange light box up Aberdeen Street to find Power Burger’s Central location. It’s a bit of a climb up the hill, but you’ll want to work up an appetite. Despite being a literal hole-in-the-wall, Power Burger makes great use of its space, fitting in a good amount of seating without it feeling crammed.

Fitted with sleek wooden furniture with black metal accents, leather lounge chairs, skateboards hung up on the wall, potted plants filling up corners and a cute nine-layer burger made entirely of tufted yarn by the entrance, the venue is equal parts cool and cosy.

Power Burger Central Restaurant Review: Food, The Chicken Smash

Love In Each Layer

Ok, let’s talk burgers. We went for The Ultimate Smash and The Chicken Smash. Our burgers quickly arrived at our table and we couldn’t wait to dig in. First to draw our eye was the glossy sheen on the buns, second were the fresh-looking greens (no limp lettuce here!), and third, the sheer size of our burgers. The latter shouldn’t have been a surprise knowing The Ultimate Smash comprised four 2oz Angus beef patties and three slices of American cheese and that The Chicken Smash piled two natural chicken patties and a layer of cheese.

A burger of this caliber deserves to be broken down in layers. Starting with those beautiful milk buns, which were soft and plump. Then the often unappreciated green, which in this case played a commendable supporting role. They use fresh local organic vegetables, specifically kale (which we must mention was not bitter and surprisingly tender) and lettuce, which brought a crisp freshness to each bite and were strategically placed to keep the toasted buns from getting soggy.

A lot was going on in terms of flavour, with bursts of sweet, sour and savoury coming in the forms of red onion rings, pickles and melted American cheese, and a mystery homemade sauce that tied everything together. The patties, both beef and chicken, were succulent and well-seasoned. Overall, a winning burger in our books!

Power Burger Central Restaurant Review: Drink, Milkshakes

Sides And Shakes

When everything had arrived at our table, we questioned our decision to add on Milkshakes to our order, but they were lighter than your standard diner milkshake and so didn’t fill us up too quickly. The sprinkles on top were a fun touch, but anyone with a nut allergy should be warned that there are almonds blended into the shake (which isn’t mentioned on the menu).

We also didn’t regret ordering the Sweet Potato Fries and Onion Rings. They came piping hot and it was nice to have something crispy to munch on between burger bites.

Power Burger Central Restaurant Review: Location, Aberdeen Street

The Perfect Pick-Me-Up

While most meals at a burger joint will leave you feeling like you’ve committed a cardinal sin or hit you with the feeling of instant regret when that wave of lethargy washes over you, we left quite energised. This was surprising considering the amount we consumed, but nothing felt greasy or heavy.

If you work in the area, we think the combo meal is a great lunch break option for when you’re starving but don’t want to be in a food coma for the rest of the day. There’s another branch in Sham Shui Po and a takeaway shop in Sai Ying Pun.

District: Central
Cuisine: Elevated American-style burgers
How much: $88 to $138 for burgers (additional $38 for a side and drink combo)
Must order: The Ultimate Smash with a side of Onion Rings
The best for: Casual lunches and quick dinners

Power Burger is open from 12pm to 9pm on Sunday to Thursday and 12pm to 11pm on Friday and Saturday.

This passion project by Chef Shun Sato and friends offers elevated teppanyaki with a personal touch.

District: Sheung Wan
Cuisine: Modern Japanese teppanyaki
How much: $1,280 per person for 8-course omakase menu ($1,480 per person for 10-courses)
Highlights: Shirako Gyoza and Ezo Awabi
Best for: Date night and special occasions

A seemingly never-ending influx of new Japanese restaurants has spoiled the city with everything from imported ramen franchises and modern sushi roll joints, to traditional yakitori izakayas and intimate teppanyaki concepts. ENISHI falls under the latter category, promising to offer a new kind of teppanyaki dining experience. We did not doubt the delivery of inventive dishes knowing that CENSU’s chef and owner Shun Sato was one of the three talents behind this new independent opening.

Translating to “fate” in Japanese, this passion project was born out of the friendship of Chef Sato and Chefs Toru Takano and Ami Hamasaki, which bloomed while the three were working together in Australia. Read on for our honest review and highlights from the menu inspired by their personal experiences and cherished memories.

ENISHI Japanese Teppanyaki Restaurant Review: Sheung Wan Venue

The Location

ENISHI’s unassuming front can be found along Bonham Strand. Through the wooden sliding door, you’ll find a few small tables reserved for à la carte dining and the 11-seat teppanyaki counter where you can watch the chefs work the iron plate.

Throughout the minimal space, you will find a few eclectic pieces from Chef Sato’s collaborations with local artists, such as denim wall art by WASHI and porcelain vases by Amanda Tong, which are available for purchase.

What We Ate

The omakase menu begins with a dish that pays homage to Chef Shun’s hometown, showcasing jet-fresh oysters from Miyagi prefecture. Much like the oysters served at CENSU, the morsels swimming in a sanbaizu dressing are of monstrous proportions, making for a satisfying starter. The plate of Market Sashimi uses yoghurt and a dashi purée to balance out the richness of the fatty fish — a trick Chef Shun learnt from the fishermen at Tsukiji.

ENISHI Japanese Teppanyaki Restaurant Review: Shirako Gyoza

A highlight of the menu is Chef Hamasaki’s Shirako Gyoza. This love letter to Chinese dim sum takes the form of a neatly wrapped gyoza stamped with a Hokkaido shiso flower and crown daisy green sauce. The wonton-like parcels are filled with delicate cod milt, which brings a pleasant creaminess to the dish.

ENISHI Japanese Teppanyaki Restaurant Review: Ezo Awabi

Teppanyaki veteran Chef Takano shows off his command over the grill with his Ezo Awabi creation, another standout featuring whole live abalone from Hokkaido. As he cooked the meat to perfection on one end of the teppan, Chef Hamasaki created a rich, buttery sauce made with the liver of the abalone on the other. It was so delicious we requested a spoon to scrape up every last bit on our plate.

Final Thoughts

As expected, ENISHI delivered top-tier ingredients and clean, yet bold flavours, but what made the food so special were the personal stories behind the dishes and the tender attention put into each plate.

It was wonderful to watch the husband and wife duo work in concert behind the teppan. The connection felt and warmth emitting not just from the grill, but from the chefs made us glad fate brought them together to bring this concept to life.

There’s a Hong Kong dim sum dish for everyone! Literally meaning “to touch your heart”, yum cha is a universal crowd-pleaser. Here’s where to go for the best dim sum in Hong Kong…

Dim Sum Square – Best for a quick yum cha lunch

Apart from the best-selling Spring Rolls Wrapped in Rice Rolls, this reliable restaurant delivers on the dim sum must-haves including siu mai, har gao and lo mai gai (glutinous rice with chicken swaddled in a large lotus leaf) – in winter, the latter cocoons a nub of maple-scented Chinese sausage. This spot successfully squares away any dim sum cravings.

Best Dim Sum Restaurants In Hong Kong: Dim Dim Sum

Dimdimsum – Quality dim sum at affordable prices

With branches in Shanghai and Taiwan, this Hong Kong-based dim sum joint builds a loyal patronage with quality dim sum at affordable prices. Plump shrimp encased in a satisfyingly thin wrapper, this place passes the har gow test, and that is not taken lightly in our books. One surprising standout to mention are the pineapple buns filled with pineapple custard.

Ding Dim 1968 – Yum cha classics

A cheap and cheerful stop for dim sum on Wyndham Street, Ding Dim 1968 is a go-to for all our favourite yum cha staples. On top of the usual suspects, we’re also fans of the Siu Mai topped with Black Truffle, Deep-Fried Squid in Chili Garlic, and Xiao Long Bay with Pork and Crab Roe.

Best Dim Sum Restaurants In Hong Kong: Duddells

Duddell’s – Best for aesthetes & dim sum brunch fanatics

Even before the age of social media and the advent of “foodfluencers”, the adage held true: you eat with your eyes first. At the distinguished Cantonese dim sum dining room Duddell’s, which first earned a Michelin star in 2013, aesthetics are not an afterthought. The walls are graced with fine art, while the kitchen crafts exquisite bites invigorated by local and seasonal ingredients. Duddell’s popular yum cha brunch set includes some of the best dim in Hong Kong, accompanied by free-flow Champagne and a buzzy atmosphere.

Duen Kee – Best for hiking adventures

Nestled inside a village house on the slopes of Tai Mo Shan, Hong Kong’s tallest peak, Duen Kee is perfect for pre- or post-hike fuelling up. At this self-service dim sum restaurant, the atmosphere is cheerfully communal – and a dash competitive – as you hustle to acquire coveted dim sum dishes and scoop out dollops of tofu fa or soybean pudding from a giant barrel. Blanched watercress is the unexpected breakout star here: bright and vegetal with peppery notes, these greens are grown in the nearby fields and picked fresh for each service. Local and sustainable – done the down-to-earth way!

Best Dim Sum Restaurants In Hong Kong: Lock Cha

Lock Cha – Best for vegetarian dim sum

Dim sum is a Hong Kong staple, and thanks to Lock Cha Tea House, those following a vegan or vegetarian diet don’t have to miss out! Enriched by the region’s vast history of ingenious mock meats, this dim sum spread takes veggies seriously. From pickled beancurd skin to fungi-forward designs, the menu inspires with creative twists on typically meaty morsels. With the tea list triple the length of the food menu, “cha” takes the leading role it deserves in this yum cha affair par excellence.

Man Mo Dim Sum – Best for fusion dim sum

What are the ethics of enfolding foie gras in xiao long bao? Perhaps most pressingly, does involving cheese in a dim sum degustation constitute pure heresy? Contemplate these complex philosophical questions at Man Mo Dim Sum. A walk-in only (for parties under eight) wine bar and restaurant with a sister location in Bordeaux, there is some method to the madness of the menu here: chefs from Din Tai Fung and Robuchon put it together after months of tinkering. Not one for the traditionalists, the offerings here conjure a brand of “East-meets-West” dining with unorthodox pairings and explosive flavours.

Man Mo Dim Sum, Shop 05-06, Hollywood Centre, 233 Hollywood Road, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong, www.manmodimsum.com

Best Dim Sum Restaurants In Hong Kong: Run Restaurant

Rùn – Contemporary take on traditional dim sum

Awarded a Michelin star in 2022, Rùn at The St. Regis Hotel is worth a visit. In-season ingredients from around the world are painstakingly prepared by Chef Hung Chi-Kwong the traditional way, and then plated up with a refined, modern spin. Alongside classic Canton fare, the restaurant offers vegan and non-gluten set menus to accommodate differing dietary needs.

One Dim Sum – Best for “no frills” yum cha

Hold the Hokkaido scallops and Périgord shavings – One Dim Sum isn’t about reinventing the wheel. Instead, this wildly popular dim sum-eria in Prince Edward is committed to the classics. Be it celebratory turnip cake or comforting lo mai gai, most dishes on the menu are prepared remarkably well, especially considering the agreeable price tag. End on a high, sweet(er) note with the egg twists or dan san, dusted with crushed peanuts and coconut flakes, then drizzled with condensed milk.

Best Dim Sum Restaurants In Hong Kong: Seventh Son

Seventh Son – Best for special occasions

Top-tier ingredients and traditional cooking methods harmonise at Seventh Son, an elevated, classically oriented Cantonese eatery recognised by the Michelin Guide and Asia’s 50 Best. Sun Hing – Best for late-night dim sum

Open daily from 3am to 4pm, Sun Hing draws in the late night and daybreak crowds. The people congregate here for one thing: traditional dim sum, served in frenzied abundance. The pork and mushroom siu mai and curry honeycomb tripe are popular picks, but no one can pay a visit to Sun Hing without trying the salted egg yolk custard buns – a hallowed experience that feels all the more sacred in the small hours of the morning.

Best Dim Sum Restaurants In Hong Kong: Tim Ho Wan

Tim Ho Wan – Best value dim sum

One of our tried-and-true wallet-friendly favourites is none other than Tim Ho Wan. Once known around the world as one of the most affordable Michelin-starred restaurants, yum cha enthusiasts flock to its locations across Hong Kong – and now across the globe, with its several international outposts – for its uncommon balance of taste and value. All the classics are made fairly well, but the baked char siu bun – crisp and crackly outside, jammy-sweet porcine goodness inside – is what it’s all a-bao.

Tim Ho Wan, various locations across Hong Kong, www.timhowan.com

Yum Cha – Insta-famous dim sum

Growing up, we were taught not to play with our food. But at Yum Cha, fun and games are intrinsic to the dim sum experience. Here, you’re more than encouraged to nurture your inner child and engage with the multi-sensory dim sum. The steamed char siu bao (BBQ pork buns) land on your table dressed as three little pigs, while the famous custard buns tease your twin senses of disgust and delight with their oft-Instagrammed ooze or “vomiting”.
