Row row row your boat! You’ve probably heard of the Dragon Boat Festival, may have joined the celebrations and even cheered for the race, but how well do you know this ancient fête?

For some, it’s getting an adrenaline rush from watching the races, for others it may even be participating in the race and joining in on the festivities and, for the rest, it’s another day off in Hong Kong. This year, the Dragon Boat Festival falls on Thursday, 22 June but there’s more to the holiday than a race that draws the crowds. Read on to find out about its origins, the meaning behind the Dragon Boat race, customs, traditions and more.

The Dragon Boat Festival What's On

The Origins Of The Dragon Boat Festival

While the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated in Hong Kong, Mainland China and across Southeast Asian countries (Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam and Indonesia included), its origins come from Ancient China during the Zhou dynasty (1050–221 BCE).

A poet named Qu Yuan from the Chu kingdom served as a high-ranking official for the royal household. The ruler of the Chu Kingdom wanted to form an alliance with the Qin kingdom (believed to have had a corrupt system), a decision that Qu Yuan opposed. He was accused of treason and was exiled by the king.

28 years later, the Qin kingdom then eventually got its hand on Chu, and a despaired Qu Yuan retorted to ending his life by drowning in the Miluo River. Given that he was a respected figure by the general public of the Chu kingdom, his followers rushed in their boats to save him but couldn’t find his body. As a result, they started dropping balls of glutenous rice into the river so the fish would eat the rice balls instead of Qu Yuan’s body and banged gongs and drums to scare the fish away. And that’s how the tradition of the Dragon Boat Festival began.

Why A Dragon Boat?

The dragon is the only mythical creature amongst the 12 Chinese zodiac animals and is associated with royalty and believed to be rulers of the water element. The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar (a month that’s considered inauspicious), with worshippers seeking the creature to ward off evil spirits and bad luck. The boat’s dragon head is also symbolic of the belief that the vessel will awaken the dragon from its slumber.

Dragon Boat Festival Hong Kong 2023 Dragon Boat Race

Dragon Boat Festivities To Know

Dragon Boat Races

Pre-pandemic, almost 30,000 dragon boat racers from around the world would come to Hong Kong to compete, garnering a large crowd all ready to cheer. After the race, there would be a Dragon Boat Carnival along the Victoria Harbour promenade. If you want to participate in the race, you can sign up for the Stanley Dragon Boat Championships 2023 (the application deadline is Friday, 2 June). Other dragon boat teams and training centres include the Hong Kong China Dragon Boat Association and the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club.

Sassy Tip: If you want to beat the crowds and enjoy the race almost as if you’re participating in it, book a junk boat!

Rice Dumplings

To commemorate Qu Yuan, traditional sticky rice dumplings, known as zong in Cantonese and zongzi in Mandarin, are widely consumed. These pyramid-shaped dumplings are stuffed in either sweet or savoury ingredients (depending on the region you’re from) and are wrapped in bamboo leaves and tied together using string.

Time: Approx. 1 to 2 hours
Difficulty Level:
Easy

New Territories Cycle Track Network

Cycling from one end of Hong Kong to the other is no easy feat! While the total track is 60km, you can choose to only cycle sections of this trail from Tuen Mun to Ma On Shan. There are plenty of rest stations along the way so you can ride at your own pace – plus different sections offer different types of scenery, keeping the whole journey very interesting! Do note the track becomes all the more difficult in the summer heat and humidity!

Distance: 60km
Time: Approx. 6 hours
Difficulty Level:
Medium to difficult

Cheung Chau Island Guide: Cycling

Cycling In Cheung Chau

A stunning island with a quaint village feel, this is another great day out to relax away from city life. The sea-adjacent cycling path here runs along the west of the island. If you’re looking for something a bit more strenuous, get out of the village and do a full tour of the island, or make your way to Cheung Po Tsai’s cave on the south of the island. You can find bike rentals right by the seafood restaurants.

Distance: Variable
Time: Approx. 2 hours to a full day – take your time and explore the island
Difficulty Level: Easy to medium

Tai Lam Reservoir Loop

Tai Lam Country Park offers a whole range of cycling options from flat trails to mountain biking routes. This particular route is a flatter option that circles around the reservoir and is perfect for all abilities. More adventurous riders can deviate from the flat paths and take in some more difficult terrains.

Distance: 23km
Time: Approx. 3 to 4 hours
Difficulty Level: Medium

Chi Ma Wan

Since its a circular route, it’s unlikely to get lost – but keep your eyes peeled and speed steady in case a water buffalo crosses your path! Chi Ma Wan is a relatively beginner-friendly hike, but it also makes for a great introductory track for mountain biking, giving you equal amounts of thrill and magnificent views. The terrain is very rocky so be prepared to lug your bike through some sections that can be dangerous to ride on.

Distance: 5km
Time: Approx. 1.5 to 2 hours
Difficulty Level: Medium to difficult

Mui Wo Neighbourhood Guide

Cycling In Mui Wo

One of the best cycling trails in Mui Wo is the path to the Silver Mine Waterfall. It’s quite a straightforward path with a gentle incline, but still enough to get your heart pumping! But your reward will come once you get to witness the beauty of the waterfall. You can also practically take your bike anywhere in Mui Wo – just be sure to not trespass private property!

Distance: 3 km
Time: Approx. 1 hour
Difficulty Level: Easy

The Peak To Big Wave Bay

For those wanting to get the blood pumping, take your bike from The Peak to Big Wave Bay. This route involves road cycling with plenty of incline and lots of twists and turns. The views along the way are stunning and show of the shores of Repulse Bay, Deep Water Bay and Stanley. This is a route which needs to be done during quieter times of the day due to the busy roads.

If you want to elongate the route and get an amazing workout out of it, you can start cycling up Magazine Gap Road to The Peak and then continue on to Big Wave Bay.

Distance: 25km
Time: Approx. 3 to 4 hours
Difficulty Level: Difficult

Cycling Hong Kong

Tai Mo Shan Downhill Mountain Bike Route

This bucket list Hong Kong hike is an equally challenging mountain biking route. Taking “it’s all downhill from here” in the literal sense, some don’t realise that the descent is often harder than the ascent. Recommended only for experienced mountain bikers, follow the path from Kap Lung Forest Trail to Ho Pui Mountain Bike Trail.

Distance: 32km
Time: Approx. 3 to 4 hours
Difficulty Level: Difficult

Tips For Your First Hong Kong Junk Boat Party

1Best Months To Go On A Junk Boat

Depending on what kind of experience you’re after, you can either head out on a day trip to one of Hong Kong’s many beaches (here are a few of our faves), or you can hire a junk boat in the evening for a fun night between the stars and the sea. Both are great, but day junks are generally better value-for-money as they last longer (seven hours instead of four).

Junk boats get snapped up fast, so try your best to book at least one month in advance. Peak junk season typically lasts from around May to September, so if you’d like to hire a boat for the summer, it’s time to get planning!

Junk Boats Hong Kong Whats On

2Some Good Destinations For Junk Boat Trips

There are various locations that junks depart from, including Central, Causeway Bay, Aberdeen and Sai Kung. You can usually request your stopping place, but it depends on the junk company and the captain (not to mention the unpredictable Hong Kong weather!) as to where you end up.

However, if you do get a say in your final destination, we recommend Lamma for some tasty seafood or Deep Water Bay to sunbathe by the shore. Sai Kung, Clearwater Bay, Turtle Cove and Stanley Bay are also excellent options.

3What To Bring On A Junk Boat

  • Swimwear
  • A towel
  • Sunscreen
  • A change of clothes
  • Flip-flops
  • Sunglasses
  • Seasickness tablets (if necessary)
  • A floaty/noodle/lilo
  • If you’re picky, your own shampoo and toiletries for the end of the day
  • If you’re bringing your own food, make sure it is actually on board before you set sail
  • A camera or phone to take photos
  • A “dry-bag” can definitely come in handy, making sure your valuables don’t get splashed with seawater

Ozone

Famed for being the world’s tallest rooftop bar, Ozone truly deserves its spot on your Hong Kong bucket list. We personally prefer going during the day or around sunset (day drinking and not ashamed!) — at night, it can be tough to get much of a view (due to the reflection on the glass!).

Getting To The West Kowloon Cultural District

One of the most asked questions is perhaps, how do you get to West Kowloon?

By MTR: Get off at Kowloon Station Exit E4 or E5, and then walk along Nga Cheung Road and cross the footbridge into the West Kowloon Cultural District. You can also follow signposting when getting off at Austin Station.

By bus: There are a number of buses that are just a five-minute walk away, by alighting at either Austin Road West or the toll plaza. You can also take minibus routes 26D and 74D that stops right at the entrance of West Kowloon Art Park. For the full list of bus routes, check here.

By car: There are multiple parking spaces across the West Kowloon Cultural District — see details here.

Through Elements: We’ve been there, aimlessly walking around Elements to try and figure out how to get to West Kowloon Art Park. The footbridge next to Mango Tree is by far the easiest way through the maze-like mall.
